Only in October

The month of October is the most eventful month in North American sports, being that it’s the only month of the year where the National Basketball Association, National Football league, Major League Baseball, National Hockey League, Major League Soccer, and National Women's Soccer League are all in the middle of their seasons.

In fact, it’s more than just in-season games. Most of them also have major implications to their seasons going on!  Let’s break it down.

The MLB Playoffs began October 7, and the World Series will begin on Friday, October 28. The NFL is in the middle of the regular season for the entirety of the month. The NBA had Opening Night on Tuesday the 18th, and the Golden State Warriors initiated the season by raising their championship banner. NHL: Opened the season on October 11. The Colorado Avalanche also raised their championship banner to get the season started. The MLS Cup playoffs began October 15 and runs through the month with their championship in November. The NWSL playoffs began in October. The championship will be hosted in Washington D.C at Audi Field on October 29.

For the first time in 2022, the rare Sports Equinox day happened this week on the 20th.  Thursday Night Football between the New Orleans Saints and Arizona Cardinals, the MLB playoffs ALCS Game 2  between theYankees vs. Astros, two NBA games and 12 NHL games will all be taking place in one day to create the Sports Equinox, the 27th one ever.

Philadelphia sports fans have certainly enjoyed the fun of October so far. The Philadelphia Phillies are playing in the NLCS for a trip to the World Series; facing the San Diego Padres. They eliminated the defending champion Atlanta Braves in the previous round. The Philadelphia Eagles have started the season 6-0, and are the only undefeated team left in the NFL. The Philadelphia Flyers started their season 3-0 and also seem to be exceeding expectations.

Although the Philadelphia 76ers lost their opener to the Boston Celtics on Tuesday, there’s a lot to look forward to as they have very high expectations with the first full season of James Harden on their roster.

It may be better for some fanbases than others, but whether you’re an NBA fan, MLB fan, NFL fan, or a fan/follower of any of the other major leagues going on, everyone has something to look forward to this month.
